Maintaining the Architecture
It is important that the Northern Virginia ITS Architecture remain accurate and current as ITS projects are planned, designed and implemented.
To ensure that the Northern Virginia ITS Architecture reflects recently implemented ITS projects, the project manager, upon completion of the project, is requested to notify the VDOT NRO's ITS / Operations Planning Staff of the need to update the architecture for the completed project architecture by submitting project information through the Contact Us link. Depending on the project implementation and impacts to the architecture, the project manager may be contacted for additional details.
VDOT NRO's ITS / Operations' Planning Staff is responsible for the update and maintenance of the regional architecture.
Architecture Maintenance Process
It is important that the Northern Virginia ITS Architecture remain accurate and current as ITS projects are planned, designed and implemented. The following activities ensure that the Northern Virginia ITS Architecture is updated periodically.- Submit final project architecture and Rule 940 Checklists to VDOT NRO's ITS / Operations' Planning Staff VDOT NRO's Project Managers
- Identify project components that require changes to the regional ITS architecture
- Compile changes
- Conduct regional ITS architecture update workshop
- Update the regional ITS architecture (VDOT NRO's ITS / Operations' Planning Staff)
Step 1. - Submit checklists to VDOT NRO's ITS / Operations' Planning Staff: To ensure that the Northern Virginia ITS Architecture reflects recently implemented ITS projects, the project manager, upon completion of the project, should update the Rule 940 checklist and submit it to the ITS / Operations' Planning Staff. If the Turbo Architecture files are available, the project manager can send the architecture details by selecting the Contact Us link on Northern Virginia ITS architecture website.
Steps 2-5 – Compile, review and update the architecture: VDOT NRO's ITS / Operations' Planning Staff is responsible for the update and maintenance of the regional architecture. The ITS / Operations' Planning Staff will periodically conduct architecture update workshops with major stakeholders in the region to review changes to the system due to project implementation, and other causes. Approved changes will be incorporated into the Northern Virginia ITS Architecture. VDOT NRO's ITS / Operations' Planning Staff will also ensure that there is consistency between the Northern Virginia ITS architecture and the Metropolitan Washington Regional ITS Architecture, the Virginia Statewide Architecture and the Virginia Northwestern and Central Regional ITS Architectures. This process allows for the evolution of the regional architecture and maintains its usefulness to the stakeholders.
